The prize was founded in 2007 by businessman and philanthropist Fuad El-Hibri and his wife Nancy El-Hibri in order to highlight the importance of peace education and to support people who are working for a just, peaceful and healthy planet.  El-Hibri is the CEO of Emergent BioSolutions, as well Chairman of the El-Hibri Charitable Foundation.  Past winners include Professor Abdul Aziz Said, the Mohammed Said Farsi Chair of Islamic Peace at American University; Scott Kennedy, an influential Peace Educator for 40 years; and Dr. Mary Elizabeth King a professor of peace and conflict studies at the United Nations-affiliated University for Peace.

Nominations for the 2010 prize will be accepted until June 6, 2010, with the winner announced on July 11, 2010.  The award will be presented on September 21, 2010, which is the International Day of Peace. Emergent BioSolutions Inc. (NYSE: EBS) announced today that it has signed a new, multi-year, firm fixed price contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to supply an additional 14.5 million doses of BioThrax® (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed), its FDA licensed anthrax vaccine, for inclusion in the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS).

The total value of this follow-on contract is between $364 million and $404 million, with the higher amount tied to the delivery of product having four-year expiry dating. First deliveries of BioThrax under this new contract are scheduled to begin in 3Q 2009, immediately following the scheduled completion of deliveries under the company’s current $448 million contract to supply 18.75 million doses of BioThrax to the SNS. Final product deliveries under this new contract are anticipated in 3Q 2011.

AVP-21D9 is a human monoclonal antibody product candidate that is being developed as an intravenous treatment for patients who present with symptoms of anthrax disease following exposure to Bacillus anthracis. In non-clinical studies, this candidate demonstrated an ability to protect animals challenged with a lethal dose of inhaled anthrax spores. AVP-21D9 is being developed with funding support from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health (NIAID), including a grant to establish a cGMP manufacturing process and to test efficacy in additional inhalation studies.

This RFP is designed to meet the government’s stated goal to procure 25 million doses of an rPA anthrax vaccine for the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS). Under the terms of the asset acquisition, Emergent BioSolutions paid VaxGen $2 million upon execution of the definitive agreement and may be obligated to pay up to an additional $8 million in milestone payments, plus specified percentages of future net sales.

About rPA 102
The vaccine candidate, rPA 102, is based on a recombinant form of the protective antigen protein. This vaccine contains a purified protein (rPA) formulated with an alum adjuvant and is designed to induce antibodies that neutralize anthrax toxins. The vaccine candidate does not cause anthrax infection and is based on the pioneering work of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). rPA 102 has been the subject of two research and development grants totaling approximately $100 million from the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). In 2004, HHS awarded VaxGen an $877 million contract for delivery of 75 million doses of rPA 102. The contract was subsequently terminated by HHS, based on its determination that VaxGen failed to successfully cure the condition endangering performance and failed to meet a milestone imposed by HHS that required VaxGen to initiate a clinical trial of the vaccine candidate by December 18, 2006. This failure was primarily related to stability issues with the vaccine.
